Setting up an International Exchange Platform to Promote Educational Cooperation and Talent Development
Two major events, the International Education Seminar under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Opening Ceremony of the Third HSK Study Abroad Exhibition in Indonesia, hosted by Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, Chinese Testing International of Confucius Institute Headquarters and co-organized by School of Continuing Education of Tsinghua University, were held at Kura Kura Bali on October 25th, 2019. Approximately 130 guests from nearly 30 universities from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and other countries, 12 enterprises, and Chinese and Indonesian government departments attended the events.

Mr. Zhou Bin, Cultural Counsellor of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Chen Wei, Deputy Consul General of Consulate – General of the People’s Republic of China in Denpasar of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Ainun Na’im, Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, Mr. Trisutalaksana Dadang Sudarman, Deputy Director of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, Mr. I Gede Ardika, President Director of Kura Kura Bali, Mr. Li Peize, General Manager of Chinese Testing International of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Mr. Liu Zhen, Director of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center and Dean of Tsinghua’s School of Continuing Education attended the event.
The event, presided over by Ms. Lang Xiaohong, General Director of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center Office and Assistant Dean of Tsinghua’s School of Continuing Education, was kicked-off with a traditional Indonesian performance and a Chinese calligraphy writing exercise. The contrasting nature of the two traditional art forms complemented each other and symbolized the harmony of Chinese and Indonesian cultures.
Mr. Zhou Bin, Cultural Counsellor of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Indonesia firstly expressed congratulations in his speech on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia, as well as a warm welcome to the representatives of universities and enterprises who attended the event. Zhou said, “In recent years, under the opportunity of jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Maritime Fulcrum, China and Indonesia have deepened pragmatic cooperation and led the relations between the two countries into a fast track of mutually-beneficial and win-win development. Under this big picture, the ways of educational and cultural cooperation between the two countries have been constantly innovated and the fields of cooperation have been deepened. It is hoped that these cooperation projects will contribute to people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and Indonesia, and inject new vitality into the development of bilateral relations between the two countries”.
Mr. Liu Zhen, Director of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center and Dean of Tsinghua’s School of Continuing Education delivered a key-note speech entitled “Realization of BRI through the practice of Continuing Education”. Liu introduced the development of Tsinghua University Southeast Asia Center and School of Continuing Education, and explored how Tsinghua University has been developing its discipline resources and giving full play to the advantages of continuing education and training, with focusing on international engineering management training. Liu said, “Tsinghua University will play a leading role in continuing education in universities throughout the country, follow the national strategy, and actively participate in talent development and cultural exchanges with BRI countries through the Southeast Asia Center”.
Ms. SU Peng, Vice Director of Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua University delivered a key-note speech entitled “Carrying out Talent Cultivation in Higher Education under the BRI”. Su introduced the work Tsinghua University has been implementing to serve the BRI, focusing on the training of undergraduate talents. Su said, “Tsinghua students should go abroad in greater numbers to realize the diversity and complexity of the world, so as to better shoulder the historical mission and responsibility”.
Mr. I Gede Ardika, Mr. Trisutalaksana Dadang Sudarman and Mr. Li Peize respectively expressed good wishes for the event, and believing in that the Belt and Road Initiative has not only brought new prospects and enlightenment to China, but also provided many opportunities for BRI countries and for various industries.
On behalf of Indonesian government, Mr. Ainun Na’im expressed warm congratulations to the event and willingness to provide more support and believed that this event will contribute to the development of cooperation between China and Indonesia.
The panel discussion in the afternoon was presided over by Mr. Li Peize, and nine guests from Chinese, Indonesian and Vietnamese universities and enterprises exchanged views on the thinking and prospect of talent development and cultural inheritance under the opportunities brought by the BRI. The discussion was carried out with positive interaction and a warm atmosphere.

During the event, Mr. Liu Zhen and Mr. Li Peize signed a cooperation agreement on online Chinese training on behalf of Tsinghua University Southeast Asia Center and The Chinese Testing International of Confucius Institute Headquarters. The purpose of this collaboration is to promote the sharing of educational resources and to train high-quality Chinese talents suitable for local needs around the specific needs of BRI countries.
The rapid development of the information age and the historical opportunities brought about by the BRI have brought unprecedented platforms and infinite vision to educational exchanges and cooperation. The friendship between countries lies in the mutual affinity of the people, and the mutual affinity of the people lies in the mutual connection of the heart.
