On October 9th, 2018, the ground-breaking ceremony of Kura Kura Bali sustainability-based development along with MOU signing for the establishment of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center (Tsinghua SEA) and Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Creative Campus were held at the Three Mountains, Kura Kura Bali Island.
The Tsinghua SEA is an organization that focuses on non-degree education and cultural exchange. Its operation is aided by UID Foundation (Yayasan Upaya Indonesia Damai/United In Diversity Foundation) and will be located in Kura Kura Bali, Bali.

A remarkable performance of Balinese Barong Dance and Chinese Lion Dance known as Barongsai was performed as a symbol of cultural exchange between the collaborating parties.
At the signing ceremony, Qiu Yong and Mari Elka Pangestu signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of Tsinghua University and UID Fund respectively. Ainun Na’im, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Republic of Indonesia, and Rudiantara, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, individually signed a three-party cooperation memo with Qiu Yong and Mari Elka Pangestu, committed to cooperation in high-level talent education.
In his address, President Qiu started by conveying his deepest condolences to the survivors, families, and people recovering from the recent earthquakes, tsunami, and volcano eruptions.
He reviewed the history of exchange between Tsinghua University and Indonesia and described the planning process behind the realization of the Tsinghua SEA.
He noted that Tsinghua would be the third overseas physical presence of Tsinghua University, based on its past successful experience in establishing the Global Innovation eXchange (GIX) Institute in Seattle and the China – Italy Design Innovation Hub in Milan, Italy.
The Tsinghua SEA will focus on talent training, academic exchange and cooperation in Southeast Asia and around the world.
President Qiu expressed his sincere gratitude to the UID Fund, The GITI Group, and all those who cooperated and who participated in the conception and construction of Tsinghua SEA.
The Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Xiao Qian, stated in his address that the ground-breaking of Tsinghua SEA in Kura Kura Bali as a “historic moment”.
The Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs of The Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Kura Kura Bali President, I Gede Ardhika all gave speeches during the ceremony and extended their best wishes for the future of Tsinghua SEA.
The groundbreaking ceremony was part of the pre-conference Welcome & Dinner programme for participants of the Tri Hita Karana Forum 2018 on Sustainability held on 10-11 October 2018 in conjunction with the World Bank Group and IMF Annual Meetings in Bali.
