Before entering Pura Dalem Sakenan, big trees clad in the traditional poleng (black and white checkered cloth)&nbsp; stand guard. Considered to be the residence of Sakenan's guardian spirit, they are a symbol of the temple's sacredness.There are close to 20 temples situated on Serangan island including one of Bali's six most sacred temples, Pura Dalem Sakenan. The 11th-century temple is the main destination of the local annual Piodalan festival, a celebration of the temple's anniversary.The Piodalan is a celebration 
of the temple's anniversary as well as an expression of thankfulness to 
Hyang Widhi Wasa. It is held once every 210 days according to Balinese 
calendar.&nbsp; Sakenan is very special as its Piodalan falls the same day as Kuningan, the last day of one of the most&nbsp; important festivals, the 10 day Galungan&nbsp;Participating in the prayers and blessings on the occasion of Kuningan is an exceptional human and spiritual experience. Balinese from all over the island come to pray and celebrate, dressed in beautiful traditional styles, carrying beautifully crafted offerings, ready for the holy water blessing before enjoying the gamelan music and Barong dances.

Sakenan Temple

The Serangan village children, like in all Balinese villages, are active members of the local community.&nbsp; From a young age they learn the many cultural aspects of Balinese life, through the dances, the gamelan and the folk tales handed down by the elders. Amongst the many colorful activities in Serangan Village, children also learn about living in balance with the environment and learn how to care for it. They are always present to help when we organize a mangrove planting and propagation day.

When they landed on this island to drink water they got the “sira angen” condition.&nbsp; These sailors felt at home here and did not want to leave this island. <span style="font-family: " source="" sans="" pro",="" -apple-system,="" blinkmacsystemfont,="" "segoe="" ui",="" roboto,="" "helvetica="" neue",="" arial,="" sans-serif,="" "apple="" color="" emoji",="" ui="" symbol";="" font-size:="" 1rem;"="">The Bugis sailors whose religion is Islam even chose to settle in this island and lived peacefully with the local residents who are Hindu. <span style="font-family: " source="" sans="" pro",="" -apple-system,="" blinkmacsystemfont,="" "segoe="" ui",="" roboto,="" "helvetica="" neue",="" arial,="" sans-serif,="" "apple="" color="" emoji",="" ui="" symbol";="" font-size:="" 1rem;"="">After that, they built their own settlement which is called Kampung Bugis and this settlement still exists until now.<span style="font-family: " source="" sans="" pro",="" -apple-system,="" blinkmacsystemfont,="" "segoe="" ui",="" roboto,="" "helvetica="" neue",="" arial,="" sans-serif,="" "apple="" color="" emoji",="" ui="" symbol";="" font-size:="" 1rem;"="">Serangan is a wonderful example of a place valuing tolerance and respect amongst its happy community.

Fisherman Community

Traditions in Bali are strong, and the passing on of culture and rites remains very important.From a young age, children participate in all Balinese arts and crafts such as music, dance, sculpture, painting or kite building and flying.Regular competitions are held between villages to showcase the local talents.

Life of Artistic Expression

Serangan is known for its talented fishermen and for its seaweed farmers. Walking around the village, you will easily find numerous vendors of deliciously marinated freshly caught fish (tuna, snapper, grouper, calamari...)grilled on coconut husks or seaweed dishes served with Krupuk Klejat (seashell chips), rice cake and crispy fish skin. And of course, some spicy sambal with these will brighten up the whole experience!
